I wanted to use this show and the previously discussed dynamics to address the issue of women in leadership within the church. First and foremost, if you are a member of the Church of the Lord Jesus Christ, marching orders about positions in the family of God should be guided by the spirit of God and not man made traditions. For the scripture points out that all are called but few are chosen. In the last days, I will pour out my spirit upon all flesh. And their sons and their daughters shall prophesy. All are offered an invitation to be a part of God’s family and serve in his church but few respond to the invitation and even less are selected “by God” to serve in positions of authority in the church.
The scripture that is commonly used to subjugate and regulate women in the church can be found in the first book of Timothy. The quote is as follows: “And I want women to be modest in their appearance. They should wear decent and appropriate clothing and not draw attention to themselves by the way they fix their hair or by wearing gold or pearls or expensive clothes. For women who claim to be devoted to God should make themselves attractive by the good things they do.
Women should learn quietly and submissively. I do not let women teach men or have authority over them. Let them listen quietly. For God made Adam first, and afterward he made Eve. And it was not Adam who was deceived by Satan. The woman was deceived, and sin was the result.” (1 Timothy 2:9-14 NLT).
With this simple passage in scripture men throughout the Christian church have oppressed and segmented women to certain positions within the church. But the question is, is this God’s will? Paul provided this information to Timothy to address a specific issue in the Ephesian church. This issue within the Ephesian church dealt with individuals using their newfound liberty in Christ to challenge, rebel, and disrespect their husbands, society, and follow the teachings of demons. Paul in retaliation informed Timothy and the church that their needs to be order within the church. Not subjugation of people but order and designation. For God is not the author of confusion. Now, whenever you study the bible, God’s original place and designation for people was not to have gender specific roles. In the first book of the bible, Genesis, it states that God created men and women in his image. Nowhere in this book will you find God instructing Adam, you shall hunt, gather and be a leader in business and subjugate the wife. Conversely, you will not find it in scripture where he talks to Eve you shall run bare foot and pregnant, cook the food and clean the home. No, when both were created the wife was to be the help-meet (counterpart) of her husband. Gender roles came after sin entered life.
Women are equal partners in Christ for as the male of the species was created in the image of God so are the female of the species of man. If God desires for a woman to have a call of ministry on her life, he will place it in her heart and prepare her for the mission just like he does for men. For even in the Old Testament we see examples of women leading men and nations. Just read the book of judges and you will see one of the first leaders of the children of Israel was a prophetess named Deborah (Judges 4:4). The also used Ester (The book of Ester) to save a nation, first rising to power in a gentile kingdom in an effort to help her people. Bless God he can do anything. Don’t forget in the book of Kings (2Kings 22:14) Hilkiah the priest, Ahikam, Acbor, Shaphan and Asaiah went to speak to the prophetess Huldah, who was the wife of Shallum son of Tikvah, the son of Harhas, keeper of the wardrobe. So please don’t believe the lie cleverly spun by the enemy that women are secondary to men. No they are joint heirs in Christ and are given special talents and gifts to benefit the church.
Well until we meet again.
