It is good to know that the Lord can and is able to renew and restore our souls. Soul in the bible is interchangeable with the mind. So when the Psalmist writes that he restores my soul, insert the word mind. For to renew the mind is paramount for any man or woman who desire to please the Lord and obey his commandments. So many images today, viewpoints, and ideas presented to us via our enemy have continuous negative effects on us individually and as a society. Sadly, these negative ideas disparage, denigrate, and dehumanize. They affect how we live, treat others and our decision making. That is why it is great to know as the Psalmist King David wrote, he restoreth my soul (Psalm 23:3 KJV). But how does one restore their mind? We as a race (human race) can only do this by studying, reading and living out the revealed Word of God (bible). For as the apostle Paul write to the church in Rome, “ I beseech you therefore, brethren by the mercies of God, that you present your bodies a living sacrifice, holy, acceptable unto God, which is your reasonable service. And be not conformed to this world: but be transformed by the renewing of your mind…. (Romans 12:1-2 KJV).
This message is apropos today, especially as we hear from our current and potential leaders of government and business who quantify and categorize segments of our population as undesirable, insignificant, and unintelligent. This is diametrically opposed to the way the God of the bible views humanity. For the Lord does not want us to conform to this view point but to be transformed by the renewing of our minds. This process takes time. It doesn’t matter if you are a Christian or a non-believer. For most of our lives we have all been bombarded or influenced with thoughts, ideas, and suggestions that reinforce these negatives stereotypes. And turning over a new leaf and thinking the way God thinks is a culture change. The process first starts with all of us being completely honest with our selves. Examining our hearts and minds and inquiring why it is that we believe the way we do about any individual or group. Why do I hate “those kind of people”? Why do I despise this individual? Why do I hate working for “that female” If you examine your heart (spirit) the Lord will help you clean out that mess (hatred, fear, enmity) and will create in you a clean heart that is right in his sight so that you might not sin against him.
Once you examine yourself, request forgiveness of the Lord, He will then lead you in the paths of righteousness for his namesake (Psalm 23:3 KJV). I like how the Psalmist states that there are path(s) of righteousness (good standing with God). To be in good standing with God means that you will be led by the Spirit of God through avenues that will test you and eventually shed away anything that is not pleasing to the Lord. Whether it be racism, sexism, genderism, homophobia, extreme nationalism, sectarianism, fear, lust, etc. Trust that the Lord will guide you through and down these paths. Never fear for He is always there, willing and able to help you. For if He did not correct you it would mean that you are not his own.
Well until we meet again. I pray that The Lord bless thee, and keep thee: The Lord make his face shine upon thee, and be gracious unto thee: The Lord lift up his countenance upon thee, and give thee peace.
