I’m almost tired of hearing about this election every cycle. When I tune into some religious programing, they want to convince their viewers that God has ordained a certain candidate for this hour and a season such as this. With the implication that if you don’t vote the way that I say you should you are not a true Christian and could be on your way to Hell. Why can’t Christians make up their own minds and know for themselves that God will never be for one party. He is only for what’s right. He is for loving your neighbor as yourself. He is for having the punishment fit the crime. He is for not burdening a citizen with unpayable debt. He is for treating the foreigner with respect. He is for releasing the bond servant. He is for protection in times of war but not depending solely upon your own strength but depending upon his mighty power. He is for marriage between a man a woman. He is for the family who humbles themselves under the mighty hand of God. Amen.
I like the account in the book of Joshua between Joshua (Moses’ successor) and the Commander of the Lord’s Army. Joshua stepped out to meet him and inquired which side the Commander fought under. The Commander related that he is for neither side. This small intersection in the bible should remind you and I that we should pray for our candidates and our leaders. Regardless if we believe that they are heathens or saints. For we should pray for our land so that we may live in peace. Many Christians and people feel that the only way to influence our nation’s leaders are through loud clarion calls, donating, or marching/standing for a cause. These are great avenues and can affect change and we should engage in such action when we can. But the most effective way to affect your nation and her leaders is through prayer. For it can only take a God to guide the heart of a leader. Only God can warm their heart and stir them toward a path that is for the good of the land. If Christians would get hatred, animosity, greed, and covetous out of their heart they would be able to pray effectively for the nation. Stop with the hatred of a party, ethnic groups, gender, sexual orientations. Regardless if you disagree with their policies and beliefs. Yes, we know that nations and all sinners will be judged. But while we are here in the land of the living and within this dispensation, we should pray and continue in prayer for the nation and the people. For the Devil loves division and hatred. He thrives on these and hopes that the church will revel in them for it will cause paralysis. So my thought for today is to pray for the presidential candidates. And that whomever gets in office that their advisors and teams will make wise decisions so that we may all live in peace.
May God’s peace and his Spirit be with you all.
